Paul's musical journey began in his teenage years when he first started playing the guitar. Drawing inspiration from artists of the '70s, early influences were from the likes of Paul Simon, Ralph McTell, Focus, David Bowie, Bread, Eagles, Neil Young, The Who, Wings, ELO, Gary Moore, America and later Steve Hackett. Contributing to a local folk band, often "very much in the background." these formative years were steeped in the vibrant atmosphere of The Bell & Pump folk club in Edgbaston, Birmingham, where weekly visits absorbed the rich traditions of the genre.
Life, as it often does, intervened, and it was several decades before he picked up the instrument again. Today, those roots still run deep, informing an accoustic style that balances the intricate playing with a touch of the melodic flair found in progressive and rock influences.
A shared passion for music and a similar taste led him to connect with Mike through their running club, Eden Runners. They started playing together in 2023 and, despite Paul having never played or sung in public since those teenage folk days, they performed at their first open mic in February 2024. They were, by his own admission, extremely nervous, but it marked the start of a new chapter in his musical life.
Mike’s been hooked on guitar music for as long as he can remember. He started out loving 80s rock and metal, then stumbled into the blues through players like Gary Moore and Bernie Marsden - guys who could slow it down and play with real feeling. Chasing their influences led him back to the ’60s British blues greats like Peter Green and Eric Clapton, and then further to the classic electric blues legends - B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy - all of whom he’s been lucky enough to see live.
After years of air-guitaring through his teens, Mike finally picked up the real thing in his twenties, learning Rush riffs and jamming with friends. A first band fizzled before its first gig, and his white 80s Fender Strat spent decades just sat on a guitar stand looking pretty.
Then in 2023, Paul spotted that Strat, talked him into dusting it off, and before long they were jamming together and in 2024 did their first open mic at Plug & Play.
